World Travel

I grew up taking road trips in the United States, including a drive-away trip with Irish kids my age. I did not travel outside America until my 40s, when I went to China. Since then, I have traveled as much as I can.

My preferred way to travel is to stay in a place for months, or even years, and get to know it. I spent about two years in China on one trip, with roughly 4 years there cumulatively. I have also spent about six months in Japan, eight months in South Africa, four months in Bulgaria, and three months in the Philippines. I have traveled to Thailand, South Korea, Mexico, Canada, the Virgin Islands, India, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Austria, Turkey, and Vietnam.

One of the projects I created along the way is the Pomoduino. I created it partly to facilitate my travels and partly to have something I could teach and show when visiting hackerspaces. It gives me a project to bring into those spaces and a way to connect my interest in travel with my interest in making and technology.

Wherever I travel, my favorite things to do, besides experiencing as much of the local culture as I can, are to eat the local food, drink the local booze, and visit as many hacker and maker spaces as possible.
