Freelance writing, design, and coding
With over 30 years of freelance experience, I developed a versatile skill set spanning logo design, graphic design, web design and development, photography, 3D modeling, book publishing, editing, technical writing, and advertising. I served as Art Director for Urban Moto, a motorcycle magazine, and taught graphic design at the Academy of Art University, including courses preparing students for Adobe certification. I also served as President of YLEM, where I built the website and designed the print journal. Additionally, I worked as a technical writer for several Silicon Valley technology companies. My work has been featured in magazines and across the web, serving clients from a wide range of industries. In addition, I have conceptualized and executed the majority of the designs for my own projects (including this website you are on right now), demonstrating a commitment to creative ownership and end-to-end execution.
Logos
My logo clients have included a psychedelic spirit guide, artists, doctors, and a private eye. Each project required a distinct visual language. The spirit guide needed symbols that referenced altered states. The doctors required clarity and restraint. The private eye needed a mark that suggested observation without spectacle. I approached each identity as a functional problem, not an artistic exercise.
Web Design
I have built websites by hand coding and through WordPress. More recently, I use AI to assist with development tasks. This includes generating code structures, organizing content, and testing responsive layouts. The tools have changed, but my focus remains the same: delivering functional, well-structured sites
Print Design
My print design work includes ads, flyers, postcards, business cards, letterhead, and product design. Each format serves a specific communication goal. I consider material, scale, and production constraints alongside visual hierarchy. Print requires precision before output, and I plan accordingly.
3D Modeling
I have produced 3D models for product applications, including a chicken coop and a pretzel stand. Both required attention to assembly logic and material limits. The chicken coop prioritized access points and weather resistance. The pretzel stand focused on countertop footprint and stability. Each model was built for practical use.
Written Work
I served as art director for Urban Moto magazine and the YLEM Journal. In these roles I designed the website, completed book layouts, produced graphs, and assisted with editing a manuscript titled Sam's Rules. I have also written technical documentation, created charts, produced video content, and developed illustrations for product and web companies.
